Differences Explained
Understanding Guardianship & Conservatorship
Guardians and conservators are appointed and supervised by the courts through a formal court order when an individual is unable to make certain decisions independently due to medical or behavioral factors. Guardianship focuses on personal matters such as health care, housing, well-being and access to services, while conservatorship addresses financial responsibilities, including managing assets, paying bills and overseeing income or property. In some cases, the courts may appoint a limited guardian when a person can make some decisions independently but needs guidance in specific areas. Together, these court-appointed roles are designed to protect individuals while ensuring their personal and financial needs are responsibly managed.

Supportive Decision Making in Practice
Supportive decision making is an approach that helps individuals understand their options, express their preferences and remain actively involved in decisions that affect their lives. This philosophy guides how we deliver guardianship and conservatorship services every day.
We take the time to build relationships, learn personal preferences and involve individuals as much as possible in the decision-making process. We support informed choices while ensuring each person has the care, protection and stability they need.
